What to expect during a lesson
Because Feldenkrais® lessons are educational in nature, clients are referred to as students, not patients.
Feldenkrais work can take place in individual or group sessions. The following describes what happens during one-on-one sessions.
Individual sessions are specifically tailored to the needs of the student and are usually 45-60 minutes long. Students are fully clothed at all times and are asked to wear comfortable, non-restrictive pants and shirts.
Often the session will start with the student lying or sitting on a low padded table. However, some lessons involve other positions such as standing or walking.
Through gentle touch and verbal instructions, the Feldenkrais practitioner guides the student in ways that encourage the discovery of new, more comfortable and efficient movement patterns. There are over 1000 Feldenkrais lessons which the practitioner and student will draw upon to create an environment where learning can occur. Comfort is always of primary importance-no forceful or invasive techniques are used.
*Homework* may or may not be suggested. For the most part, work outside of the sessions focuses on noticing the changes or new sensations that may be occurring. The process is one of awareness and discovering, not discipline and repetition.
Some students learn what they need to know in one session. Others may find that after four to six sessions, they can continue to learn in a class setting or on their own. People who have serious limitations or long-standing issues may work individually with a practitioner for six months, or until they feel comfortable with monitoring and affecting movement patterns on their own. In all cases, the goal is for the student to learn how to choose more comfortable, efficient movement patterns in their daily activities and how to recover from stresses to the system when they do occur.
