About Feldenkrais®

What is Feldenkrais®?

The Feldenkrais Method® named after its originator Moshe Feldenkrais, D.Sc. (1904-1984) is a unique learning process that uses gentle movement and heightened awareness to improve flexibility, coordination and balance.

Feldenkrais® lessons help people become aware of their movement habits and help them develop other, possibly more efficient, options. Because the lessons are performed gently and slowly, the body does not react defensively. Instead, it recognizes and accepts the more comfortable patterns and movement improves.

Because of the complexity and sophistication of our bodies, there is no one best posture, no one best way to breathe or no one best way to sit, stand and move. The key is having many options available to the nervous system and allowing it to select the most appropriate way to respond given the circumstances.

Most important, the Feldenkrais Method® teaches people how to help themselves instead of being dependent on others to fix them. Learning how to work with oneself to increase the ease and comfort of movement dramatically expands the joy and possibilities of life.

  • The Feldenkrais Method® is well-established as a way for helping people with cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, stroke, fibromyalgia or other neuro-muscular conditions. While it is not a *cure* for these conditions, greater breadth and ease of movement often results.
